The Two Broadly Classified Classes of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM's) are:

1. Friable Asbestos

2. Non Friable Asbestos

The basic difference between these two classes is that of powder form. Those asbestos that can be converted in powder from just by applying little to no mechanical force (by bare hands) are Friable Asbestos.

While those asbestos that can not be crushed or crumbled by bare hands are Non Friable Asbestos.

Friable asbestos are risky as they release asbestos fibers in the air. These fibers upon inhalation can result in serious threat to health (may result in asbestos cancer or Mesothelioma).

Non friable asbestos May not be as risky as Friable but they can be converted in friable form which again results in health risks.Non friable asbestos doesn't release fibers in air.

Friable asbestos are including in the Regulated Asbestos Containing materials by almost all government organizations (including EPA and HSE).
